Establishes Modern Mobile Communications Teaching Lab for Students

Highlights:

  • Laboratory equipped to teach state-of-the-art digital communications, including LTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® technologies
  • Teaching and research will include MIMO, 5G, IoT, chipset device characterization and other emerging technologies

SANTA ROSA, Calif., May 25, 2016

Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) today announced that it has donated $1.3M worth of design and test software and hardware to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to establish an advanced communications teaching lab for electrical engineering students. The new lab, named Keysight Technologies Advanced Communications Laboratory, was dedicated on May 6, during Cal Poly's annual banquet for the college of electrical engineering. Attendees included alumni, faculty, students and members of the industry advisory board.

"The donation is transformative for the electrical and computer engineering departments at Cal Poly," said Dennis Derrickson, department chair of electrical engineering, Cal Poly. "Students and faculty now have the capability to model, design, build and test complex communication systems. Plus, our senior and masters-level projects will partner to help create the next generation 5G designs."

The new lab includes ten systems of PXI vector signal analyzers and vector signal generators, including two 2x2 VSA and VSG combo systems, ideal for MIMO testing. The donation also included three years of Keysight application software—Signal Studio, Waveform Creator and the flagship 89600 VSA software. The software, combined with the hardware, gives students the full toolset they need to study and research new and emerging technologies. The ten resulting lab stations provide students maximum hands-on time working with advanced communication methods and research opportunities.

"The thing that keeps me up at night is the challenge of keeping our curricula relevant and learning environments current with the rapidly changing landscape of today's technology," said Deb Larson, dean of Cal Poly's college of engineering. "This donation enables the department of electrical engineering to offer classes and experiences in advanced communications to prepare our graduates for future careers at companies such as Keysight."

"We are confident the integration of Keysight wireless test hardware and libraries with the engineering curriculum will offer a truly rich learning platform for the next generation of engineers," said Satish Dhanasekaran, vice president and general manager of Keysight's Wireless Device and Operator Segment and Cal Poly industry advisory board member.
